The Eddy Current Separator (ECS) is an advanced non-ferrous separator that is capable of separating domestic and industrial waste into two individual containers, separating non-ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper from non-metallic materials such as wood and plastics.
Non-ferrous separators are very common in the fast growing market of can sorting, where they can provide an accurate separation of aluminium cans from steel cans and plastic bottles. Dependent on the application there are two types of ECS rotors available, there is a high strength rotor for delicate or specialised separations, and a standard rotor for less complex separations such as cans. The Master Magnets range of ECS units are all manufactured using a concentric rotor design to allow for maximum separation over the entire outer drum face. This design ensures that particles, which may be released from a product burden through material free fall, can also be separated. All ECS rotors manufactured by Mastermag are also dynamically balanced at 3600 RPM to ensure a trouble free service life even at the highest operating speeds. |
Operating Principles An Eddy Current Separator consists of a short belt conveyor that has its drive located at the return end and a high speed magnetic rotor system installed at the discharge end. The magnetic rotor, which is positioned within a separately rotating non-metallic drum, revolves at around 3000 revolutions per minute during operation whilst the outer drum cover rotates at the speed of the Eddy Currents' belt conveyor. As the rotor spins at these high speeds, an electric current is induced into conducting metals. The induced electric current produces a magnetic field, which opposes the field created by the rotor, repelling the conducting metals over a pre-positioned splitter plate. The remaining materials such as plastics, glass and other dry recyclables will simply free fall over the rotor, separating them from the repelled metals. Applications
Eddy Current Separators are increasingly used wherever separation of non-ferrous metals from a product stream can give a more valuable product, whether the end use is in recycling, waste reduction, raw material production or any other process whereby separation is beneficial. Typical examples of applications are : | Separation of non ferrous metals in auto shredder residueSeparation of non ferrous metals from solid waste incinerator ashSorting of steel and aluminum beverage cansRemoval of contamination from crushed glass culletSeparation of non ferrous dross from foundry sandNon ferrous metal removal in WEEE recycling plantsRemoval of aluminum components in UPVC window recyclingSeparation of non ferrous metals from wood wasteSeparation of non ferrous metals from plasticSeparation of non ferrous metals from electronic scrapSeparation of non ferrous metals from car recycling | | |
Models
The Master Magnets range of ECS units consists of 3 models, all of which differ in their separation capabilities to ensure that the most cost effective solution is always applied to a customers’ specific application.
High Intensity ECS Units
The High Intensity ECS units are specifically designed to handle the separation of small and difficult particles, which require high repulsive forces for an accurate separation. This type of ECS has the following features: - 300mm diameter, 24 pole rotor.
- Variable rotor and belt speeds to tailor separation outputs.
- Belt change jacks to enable quick and simple belt changes.
ECS 'R' Type Many ECS applications involve high throughput capabilities that can only be handled by the large High Intensity units due to their belt widths. If however, these applications do not require the separation capabilities of the larger, high specification units, then purchasing a machine of this type for its belt width alone would not be cost effective. To eliminate this problem, Master Magnets designed the ECS ‘R’ Type. The new ‘R’ Type fits into the range between the Can Sorter and the High Intensity units, incorporating features of both machines. Specific features of the ‘R’ Type ECS include: - 190mm 12 pole rotor, manufactured to fit belt widths of up to 1250mm.
- Variable rotor control.

The Can Sorter The Can Sorter is specifically designed for the separation of non-ferrous beverage cans from dry recyclables. Can Sorters are low-cost alternatives to larger Eddy Current units for customers that have simple can sorting applications which will not require high specification machines. For more information on the Can Sorter, please click here. Optional Extras Ferrous materials can sometimes get caught between the rotor and the belt, causing substantial damage to the rotor cover. The key to avoiding this type of damage is to remove the ferrous materials present in the product stream. Master Magnets often advise that this is done by installing a Rare Earth Drum Magnet. Overband Separators and Magnetic Pulleys are also ferrous separators that are often applied before an ECS unit. Other optional extras that can be supplied with a Master Magnets ECS include: - Variable speed control panels
- Base frames, Hoods, diverters and chutes
- Vibratory feeders
- Permanent drum magnets for ferrous separation
- Rotary or Static belt cleaning brushes (advised for wet product)
