The six tonne Overband Separator was to be used in one of only two operating underground mines that are located in Ireland. The order from the Lisheen mine was placed after Metal Detection Ltd (part of the Master Magnets group of companies) supplied industrial metal detectors for the detection of any tramp metals that might be within the product stream. The detectors are working very well for the mine but as there is such a large amount of tramp metal being conveyed, the detector is being activated very frequently. It was decided therefore to install a magnet before the detector to reduce downtime.

Though food processing is certainly not one the main industries for using magnets of this size, the specification details given to us were similar to those of a much more demanding application. The magnet was required to be installed over a two metre wide belt and suspended 500mm above the conveyor. As the OCW range has the versatility to suit the needs of many industries, it was chosen as the perfect solution for this food application.

Keen to meet these requirements and provide the company with a cost effective, high-performance magnet, the sales team at Master Magnets were quick to provide a quotation to make the huge Electro suspension magnet a possibility. Once the magnet was ordered and manufactured at the Master Magnets headquarters, it weighed in at a massive 8 tonnes.

Master Magnets Ltd have been manufacturing magnets of this size and many that are much larger for over 25 years. The largest Oil-cooled magnet in Master Magnet’s standard range is the 220 OCW 70. This magnet measures 2.5 square metres and weighs over 16.5 tonnes. If however, a requirement for a larger Oil cooled suspension magnet arises, then Master Magnets can design it.
